Pack Light, Walk Far
The Camino Primitivo is the oldest and one of the most demanding routes to Santiago de Compostela. With steep mountain passes, unpredictable weather, and remote stretches between villages, packing wisely is not just advice — it is a necessity.
After walking the route twice and helping dozens of pilgrims prepare, here is our definitive packing list that balances weight, comfort, and safety.
The Backpack
Your backpack should weigh no more than 10% of your body weight when fully loaded. A 35-40 litre pack is ideal. Look for one with a good hip belt that transfers weight from your shoulders to your hips.
Footwear
This is the single most important decision you will make. Trail runners have become increasingly popular and work well on the Primitivo, but mid-cut hiking boots offer better ankle support on the rocky descents between Tineo and Pola de Allande. Whichever you choose, make sure they are broken in before you start.

Clothing Essentials
- 2-3 merino wool t-shirts (quick-drying and odour-resistant)
- 1 lightweight fleece or insulating mid-layer
- 1 waterproof jacket (the Asturian mountains see rain year-round)
- 2 pairs of hiking shorts or trousers
- 3-4 pairs of merino wool socks
- 1 wide-brimmed sun hat
- 1 warm beanie for mountain passes
Rain Gear
Do not underestimate the rain on the Primitivo. Asturias and Galicia are among the wettest regions in Spain. A poncho that covers both you and your backpack is more practical than a separate rain jacket and pack cover, though carrying both provides the best protection.
First Aid & Hygiene
Blister care is essential. Carry Compeed patches, a needle and thread for draining blisters, antiseptic wipes, and sports tape. A small tube of sunscreen and lip balm with SPF are often forgotten but critical on exposed mountain stretches.
Final Tip
Lay out everything you think you need. Then remove a third of it. The Primitivo will teach you that you need far less than you imagine — and every gram counts on those mountain passes.
